Zheng Xiyuan Meets with Lord Mayor of Manchester


Mr. Zheng Xiyuan, Consul General of the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Manchester, met with Ms. June Hitchen, Lord Mayor of Manchester, members of Manchester City Council and the Northern Powerhouse Rail Director at the Consul General's official residence on Oct. 16, 2018. Consul Lyu Xiaomei and Consul Liu Wei were present at the meeting.

 Zheng briefed Ms. Hitchen and the Council members of the attempts and progress by the Consulate General in promoting cooperation between China and Manchester in projects such as music schools, football training and gardening. He introduced the impact of high-speed trains in accelerating regional economic development and in changing the economic landscape. He expressed the wishes from the Chinese side to engage in the upgrading of the intercity railway network in the north of England.

Lord Mayor Hitchen praised Consul General Zheng's initiatives in promoting pragmatic cooperation since he assumed office. She said that cities have become an important locomotive of national economic development. Manchester initiated the British industrial revolution, urban economic restructuring and the reform of local administrative governance system. The local government actively engages in international exchanges and is willing to work with the Consulate General to expand exchanges and cooperation with China in various fields.

The two parties also exchanged views on encouraging Chinese British to engage in politics, enriching the experience of Chinese students in the UK and revitalising the Chinatown.
