Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying's Remarks on the Entry into Force of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Iranian Nuclear Issue

2015-10-18

Q: The comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue entered into force today. How does the Chinese side view the process of implementing the agreement? What has China done for the implementation of the agreement?

A: Today marks an important milestone in the process of implementing the comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue, as the agreement entered into force as scheduled. The Chinese side welcomes that. The P5+1 and Iran have rendered strong political support to the agreement since it was reached three months ago, bolstering the confidence of the international community in the comprehensive, long-term and proper settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue and creating favorable conditions for a good start of implementing the agreement.

The Chinese side has been actively and constructively engaged in preparing for the implementation of the agreement since it was reached. Effective communication among China, the US, Iran and other parties on the issue of the Arak heavy-water reactor, in particular, has vigorously pushed forward preparations for the redesign of the reactor. Today, China, the US and Iran issued a joint statement of intent on trilateral cooperation concerning the redesign of the Arak reactor, showcasing the political readiness of the three countries to jointly work for the smooth implementation of the redesign. Meanwhile, the Chinese side also stays in communication with the other parties of the P5+1 and Iran to advance consultations on the "official document" on the redesign of the Arak reactor, creating necessary conditions for the redesign.

All parties should cherish the hard-won comprehensive agreement and take today as the new starting point to make full preparations for the implementation of the agreement. The Chinese side hopes that all relevant parties would keep their political will, deliver on their commitment, properly address differences and push for steady implementation of the comprehensive agreement for far-reaching results. The Chinese side will continue to make efforts for that.
