Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying's Remarks on Japan's New Defense White Paper

2016-08-03

Q: The Japanese government approved a new defense white paper on August 2 which once again laid accusations on China's defense policies and military activities. What is your comment?

A: Japan's new defense white paper made groundless accusations against China's normal defense and military activities and intervened in China's domestic affairs. China is strongly dissatisfied with that and has lodged solemn representations with the Japanese side.

I would like to stress that the Chinese government is determined in safeguarding territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests. It is our inherent right to patrol and enforce law in territorial waters off Diaoyu Dao, on which Japan has no right to make irresponsible remarks. It is beyond dispute for China to carry out normal activities in the air and on the sea pursuant to international law, domestic laws and regulations and defense development needs. China has on many occasions made it clear that it does not accept nor acknowledge the illegal and invalid ruling made by the Arbitral Tribunal on the South China Sea arbitration case initiated by the Philippines, and China is firmly opposed to any proposal and action based on such ruling. Meanwhile, China stands ready to continue it efforts to peacefully resolve relevant disputes in the South China Sea through negotiation and consultation with parties directly concerned on the basis of respecting historical facts and in accordance with international law and jointly maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea with ASEAN countries.

In recent years, Japan has been stirring up troubles surrounding regional security issues and attempting to justify its military expansion and its shake-off of post-war bondage by exaggerating security threats in the neighborhood, which has garnered wide attention from regional countries and the international community. We urge the Japanese side to learn from history, stick to the path of peaceful development, watch its words and actions in the military and security fields, and contribute to enhancing mutual trust with its neighbors and maintaining regional peace and stability, instead of the opposite.
